If you have access to the internet I will show you how for only$10 per day unlimited. All you need is google talk and a mic. Email me for help. We only sell 5 days or more though so minimum order is $50.
There is access to the internet in practically every youth hostel, so contacting the USA in no problem whatsoever; you might have to get used to the Japanese keyboard, though, since most punctuation keys are located in different spots than on American keyboards.
It is also easy to purchase phone cards at nearly every convenience card. Just dial the access number, and you will be connected.
Don’t use these cards on the Shinkansen because their tariff is quite high. They also charge more for using these phones when the train is in motion than when the train is stopped.
Onesuite long distance services can be a calling card (phone card) or use it as a VoIP service and make calls over the internet. Either way, the rates are good and the quality is clear.
Onesuite has access numbers in Tokyo and Seoul if you want to use it as a phone card.

Do you have an iPhone? Install Skype for iPhone, use a wireless connection from a hotel or an internet cafe and call from iPhone Skype.
In Japan you can check into a Manga and internet cafe and use their computers. Try using skype, or MSN or some other application.
