It is not cruel. But trust me, if the cat is used to sleeping with someone/you, they can make your life miserable by their yowling all night until they get IN to sleep with you. I had that experience. It was no fun! So, for the time I was caring for the cat, I let it sleep with me.
I do not think it is cruel as long as the cat has access to food and a liter box and can be let out first thing in the morning. Make sure the cat has something soft to lay on, a pet bed, a chair anything, because you would not want to have to lay on the floor every night.
You got to do what you’ve got to do. Put cat toys and a kitty bed in another room so that you can get some sleep. Please remember to leave it access to the litter box.
It isn’t cruel, but I understand how conflicting it may be. I am the pet parent of two felines and allowed the cats to sleep in my bed for a long time before the middle of the night antics became tiresome. As Ash stated, as long as the cat has adequate food and water to get through the evening and a soft place where it can knead and be comfortable it will adapt to its new environment.

Its not cruel, but it is impractical. If the cat wants to sleep in the same room with you, she will simply cry and whine until you open the door.

Our Bedroom Door is shut at night when we sleep. The cats and dogs have free reign on everything else. I don’t see why not.
